SS-GBSS-GB is a fiction novel by Len Deighton about what life would have been like in occupied Britain after a successful German invasion. The book does not really go into detail about how this situation came about, but rather concentrates on what life would have been like, a year after the invasion (in November 1941) if it came about. In the background story of the novel, Churchill has been shot, the King is imprisoned in the Tower of London, Germany and the Soviet Union have remained friendly (as they were in reality, from 1939 until Operation Barbarossa in June 1941), and the United States considers the war to be over. Life however goes on in Britain, and most of the population are not fighting the Germans in the resistance, but are instead learning to live with the realities of defeat and occupation. The plot concerns a Detective Archer of Scotland Yard and his attempt to solve a murder. As you might expect for a novel about Nazi occupation, the book is very dark, moody and perhaps a little disturbing. I felt it also felt it was a realistic portrayal of what might have been: one that will remind you of what the Allies were fighting for in World War II, and how glad we should be that they won. In summary, I would certainly recommend reading this book! Related Links:
